I Got Hired: Dominic
Posted on: 15 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Dominic is a Biological and Medical Sciences graduate now working at Alpha Scientific as a Microbiology Analyst.
How did you hear about your role?
I heard about this role through LinkedIn. I decided to apply for this role as I knew laboratory experience was essential to start off my career in science, when graduating I wanted to have the opportunity to delve deeper into different disciplines to further enhance my knowledge and my skills this is why I decided that this was a good job to apply for.
How did you get to where you are now?
After applying I got a call to see if I wanted to go for an interview, this was the second interview I had after graduating and I said yes to the interview, for me this was an easy decision as it would have been good practice even if I didn’t get the position. The recruitment process was quite relaxed which allowed for a stress free interview. They asked me about my goals and my experiences after graduating. Before I got this interview I was working in a supermarket and knew I needed to start gaining some experience which made the decision of accepting the job a lot easier.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
My favourite part is probably the team, on my first day I felt very welcomed into the team and it has been like that ever since and it’s really nice, especially going in as the newbie it can be quite daunting but this was made easier by the team. My other favourite part is that I have managed to gain and expand knowledge in microbiology which I am grateful for.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
I think the most challenging part of my graduate journey was finishing and not knowing where to go from there. It really took a hit on my mental health not knowing where my next steps were going to take me or how long it would take me to break into the science world.
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
My number 1 piece of advice is take it slow and don’t set goals that are too big to achieve all at once, start small and build from there. This is the one thing that I wish I could go back and tell myself at the start of my journey of looking for jobs or future endeavours, I only started realising this when I spoke to people and took advice from people.
One memorable question from my interview for this job is what goals have I set myself since leaving University, to which I responded saying I set myself unachievable goals for where I am at in my journey - I said I have goals now but they are interchangeable and if the goal post moves I move with it and I still stand by that answer.
