I Got Hired: Daniel
Posted on: 24 September 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Daniel graduated in 2024 with a BA in Criminology with Sociology. He has since joined the Metropolitan Police as a Police Constable via the Police Now programme.
How did you hear about your role?
I first saw the job advert for Police NOW on Handshake and thought about applying. I kept seeing it on different job website and decided to apply for it. It's something I've always wanted to do so decided to apply for it!
How did you get to where you are now?
The recruitment process was very long. After an initial paper sift and personality test, I had to do a very long interview on zoom which included a group exercise, roleplaying exercises, a typical interview and more. After that stage, I had to do general health and fitness tests in London which were easy enough. After all that I was accepted into the programme. Then, in terms of the training, I had a 5 week law and legislation course, 2 weeks of personal and public safety training and then finally 10 weeks of "boots on the ground" training, which was absolutely great fun.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
My favourite part is having something new every single day. Other jobs advertise themselves as doing something new every day, but with this I actually do. One day I'll be chasing after suspects, next day I'll be doing paperwork to prosecute people then I'll be engaging with a community event. Every day is so different and varied.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The job is genuinely stressful! There is a lot of stress to the job - there's a lot going on and what you do has a real effect on both victims and suspects. You have a public facing role and you need to be aware at all times. It's an exhausting and stressful job, but can be very rewarding at the same time.
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
Apply early! I've told everyone I know looking to start their career, to apply as soon as possible. It'll take so much weight off of your shoulders when you're finalising your dissertation that you don't need to worry about a job, you can enjoy your summer knowing you've got something lined up.
