I Got Hired: Beth

Posted on: 4 September 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

After graduating with a BSc in Psychology, Beth Witham began her career as a Research Assistant at Galen Research.

How did you hear about your role?

I first heard about the Research Assistant position at Galen Research when it was advertised on the university’s Handshake platform.

I chose to apply as I felt the requirements for the role matched well with some of the research internships I had done at university, and I really liked how focused Galen was on involving patients in the process of developing quality of life measures.

How did you get to where you are now?

During my second and third year at university I took part in three research internships. Two qualitative internships were supported by the Professor Gayle Brewer, and the third was a real word experimental food study conducted under the supervision of Dr Rebecca Evans. I previously volunteered with the Stroke Association during my third year of university and conducted research with stroke survivors, which gave me great insight into patient perspectives.

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

My favourite work-based experience was probably coming back to Liverpool to attend the 2024 UK Stroke Forum. It was so amazing to attend an academic conference and represent Galen Research with my colleague, as well as present my own research so early on into my career. I really enjoyed hearing from both stroke professionals and stroke survivors to learn more about stroke care.
I will say I think our team summer day out at Trentham gardens was a very close second though!

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

I think the most challenging part of my graduate journey has been trying to relax after a working day. In the first few months (particularly in winter) I found it quite hard to do things after the working day as it was already dark outside! I learned to adapt quite quickly and found ways to continue my hobbies, such as going to do something fun straight from work, getting a headlight for my runs and doing personal jobs or reading on my commute!

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

When you first start university, check your emails!

So many work experience opportunities can come through your emails so try and keep an eye out for them. The volunteering and work experience I did during university really helped me when I first started my graduate role.

Also please enjoy these few years! They really can be the making of you if you take every opportunity!

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
