How did you hear about your role?
I was going through my Handshake notifications one evening and came across a role that caught my attention. It seemed interesting and matched the kind of work I could see myself doing after university. Handshake as a platform provided by the university, was really helpful in showing me new opportunities I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. It made the process of discovering roles and applying to them feel much more approachable. I didn’t overthink the application at the time, but I’m glad I trusted that initial instinct to apply. I found the role one evening while checking my notifications on Handshake. It stood out to me as something worth applying for. At the time, I wasn’t doing anything special, just scrolling through, but I’d made it a habit to keep an eye on roles that might suit my interests.
How did you get to where you are now?
I didn’t have much work experience in tech, but getting involved with the Computer Science Society, and later becoming president, helped more than I expected. It gave me a chance to develop and show transferable skills like leadership, communication, and organising events. These came up in interviews more than any technical project I’d done. I’d really encourage anyone to get involved in what’s around them. You pick up a lot just by saying yes to things. I definitely couldn’t have got through it without my friends and family. Their support made a big difference, especially during the harder parts of the journey. My faith also kept me grounded, it gave me perspective and helped me stay calm when things got stressful.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
What I’ve enjoyed most is the structure of the graduate scheme itself. Because it’s rotation-based, I get to try out four different roles before choosing one to settle into. That’s been a big plus. It gives me the chance to see what kind of work actually excites me, and which team dynamics I work best in. It’s not just about the technical side, it’s also about where you feel comfortable, challenged, and part of a team that brings out your best.
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
The hardest part was definitely juggling everything at once: applying to roles, preparing for interviews, revising for exams, and keeping up with coursework. On top of that, I was trying to maintain a social life and manage responsibilities with the society I was part of. It all piled up quickly, and at times it felt really overwhelming. What helped was finding small ways to make it manageable. Sometimes I’d combine tasks, like catching up with a friend while having a study session together. Other times I’d set aside specific days just for hobbies or rest. It wasn’t perfect, but little things like that made a big difference.
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
Apply, apply, apply. That’s the one thing I wish I’d taken more seriously early on. The more interviews you do, the more natural it starts to feel. And honestly, being relaxed in an interview makes a huge difference. You come across more confident and can think clearly. Try to treat interviews casually but be professional of course, not as if it’s life or death. Applying to lots of roles also takes the pressure off any single one, and sometimes the opportunity you least expect ends up being the one that works out. You never know where saying “why not” and clicking apply might take you.
