I Got Hired: Abby

Meet Abby McColloch, a 2024 BSc Geography graduate, who has just started her career as an Environmental Consultant at WSP. She’s here to tell us about her journey.

How did you hear about your role?

I found the job position on Gradcracker which is a dedicated careers website for STEM students. I knew I wanted to get into a corporate graduate role relating to my degree.

How did you get to where you are now?

I applied for internships at the start of my second year, and this led me to complete a summer internship with WSP in summer 2023. I was then asked back as a graduate once I’d finished my undergraduate course to start September 2024.

As a student I made use of the Career Studio on campus as well as the support from the wider Careers & Employability team – a shout out to Dominique Price, who helped me prepare for interviews and get my CV spot on!

Your favourite experience as part of your current role?

Meeting new people and colleagues. Being able to partake in graduate events, not only progressing professionally but gaining personal development skills too.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Adjusting to the balance and routine as it’s so different to university. However, you do quickly adjust.

What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?

Don’t be afraid to fail! I applied for 15 internships and made it through to only one final stage which landed me my currently job that I love! If I’d have given up after my first few rejections and setbacks I wouldn’t be where I am today!
