I Got Hired: Grace
Posted on: 10 October 2025 by Richard Finch in Class of 2024

Grace graduated in 2024 with a degree in Geography and is currently a Sustainability Graduate Intern at the University of Liverpool.
How did you hear about your role?
I came across the role on Handshake, the University's careers platform. It immediately stood out as the ideal opportunity to kickstart my career, one that aligned perfectly with both my academic background and personal interests.
The role offered a unique blend of environmental and sustainability focus, areas I had explored in depth during my undergrad degree, with the creativity and strategic thinking involved in marketing and communications - a field I had always been interested in.
What made it even more exciting was the chance to stay connected to UoL, but in a new and impactful way, supporting the institution from the other side and continuing to grow within a familiar yet evolving environment.
How did you get to where you are now?
Looking back, one of the most valuable things I did during the application process was putting together a portfolio that showcased my skills and experience in a clear, visual way. As a recent graduate, I certainly didn't have years of professional experience, but I did have pieces of work from university assignments, personal projects, and extracurriculars that reflected my abilities in graphic design, writing, and communications. I ensured the portfolio related closely to the skills outlined in the job description, which helped the interview panel see how I could add value to the role, even without a lengthy CV.
I also had the opportunity to take part in the University's Grad+ Professional Development Programme, which helped me feel more prepared for the transition into the workplace. It was a great way to meet like-minded graduates who were in similar roles and in the same boat. Sharing experiences, learning from one another, and realising that many of us were navigating the same challenges. That sense of community, alongside the workshops and guidance on professional development, really made a difference.
Your favourite experience as part of your current role?
One of the best parts of my role has been the variety of experiences it has offered, and how much I have grown because of it. From day one, I have been able to develop a broad range of skills, from managing social media channels and assisting with event organisation, to writing and publishing news stories. Each project has pushed me to become more confident, creative, and adaptable.
What I've loved even more is that the role hasn't just been limited to marketing and comms. I have had the chance to branch out and get involved in meaningful, cross-cutting projects that have supported the delivery of the University's Sustainability Strategy - such as helping the institution achieve Fairtrade accreditation and rising in league tables, which has deepened my understanding of sustainability in practice.
I also feel really lucky to work with such an inspiring and supportive team. The University's Sustainability Team have made this journey genuinely enjoyable, and I have learnt so much from being a part of a collaborative environment. I'm excited to continue growing and build on everything I have learnt so far, as my role has recently been extended for another year!
The most challenging part of your graduate journey?
One of the most challenging parts of my graduate journey was definitely navigating the uncertainty after finishing university. It can feel overwhelming trying to find the right job, especially when you’re just starting out and aren’t sure which path to take. Navigating applications, interviews and sometimes rejection, all while figuring out what suits you best, can feel daunting.
However, I learnt that it's important to be patient and persistent, and to view each step as part of the learning process. Staying open to opportunities and seeking support from mentors, peers, and university resources can help you stay focused and confident. Remember that it's completely normal to not have it all figured out immediately!
What's your #1 piece of advice for future grads?
For anyone just starting out, my biggest advice is to focus on demonstrating what you can do rather than worrying about what you haven’t done yet. It is easy to get caught up in feeling like you need years of experience, but what truly matters is showing your potential and your willingness to learn.
Also, try not to panic - seriously. It's normal to feel a bit lost at the beginning. Take it one step at a time, say yes to opportunities that excite you (even if they scare you a little), and don't underestimate your capability. You've got this!
