Stepping Away: Alex

Posted on: 20 October 2024 by Ruby O'Sullivan in Class of 2023

Alex Vicar is a BA French and German graduate who is now working as a Junior E-Learning Designer at usecure.

How did you hear about your role and decide to apply for it?

My role was advertised on LinkedIn. I decided to apply for it as I would be able to combine my knowledge of cybersecurity from college and my language skills developed during my degree.

How did you get to where you are now?

Studying ICT in college and French and German at university gave me the perfect set skills to create cybersecurity training courses and translate them into other languages. I also have experience in planning my own lessons for my teaching internship in France as part of my year abroad.

My friends and family have all been big supports along my university and professional career. It's hard to find a job nowadays, even for graduates - motivational support and good advice from others is crucial!

Your favourite experience as part of your role?

I love being able to use my languages almost every day.

The most challenging part of your graduate journey?

Balancing researching and creating new courses, with reviewing and keeping older courses up to date and liaising with external proofreaders.

Top 3 Tips for current students and graduates:

  1. Do an internship or year in industry to gain work experience!

  2. Do extra curricular activities, such as becoming a society committee member or volunteering, to help boost your CV.

  3. Don't worry if it takes you a while to find the job that's right for you.

Graduate Outcomes Survey

The Graduate Outcomes survey exists to improve the experience of future students. All graduates are asked to share their perspectives 15 months after they finish their course, to build a national picture that UK universities and colleges use to innovate their services. League tables, Prospects and The Complete University Guide use our Graduate Outcomes data to help students make decisions about their future.
