My YINI Experience: Alfie

Posted on: 5 September 2025 by Richard Finch in Student experiences

We recently spoke with Alfie Pascoe, a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Liverpool, who has just completed his year in industry with EDP Renewables in Edinburgh.

As a Project Development Intern, Alfie gained hands-on experience in the fast-moving world of clean energy, bridging the gap between academic studies and real-world impact.

In our interview, Alfie shares insights into his placement, the skills he’s developed, and his perspective on pursuing a career in renewable energy. Here's what Alfie shared with us:

“I’ve recently wrapped up my year in industry with EDP Renewables in their Edinburgh office, where I’ve been working as a Project Development Intern.

It's been a deeply valuable 12 months of developing engineering principles, problem solving and learning from a brilliant team whose support has made this a truly enjoyable and memorable year.

During my placement, I contributed to the development of a more than 300MW portfolio of large-scale onshore wind, solar and battery storage projects across the UK, gaining experience across the full lifecycle from early-stage feasibility to construction.

Key highlights included:

  • Managing project timelines, budgets, and risks using MS Project and Excel
  • Utilising GIS software and data analysis to identify and assess potential sites
  • Producing technical reports on grid capacity and leading discussions with distribution network operators (DNOs)
  • Developing mapping tools and comparative trackers to resolve turbine delivery route challenges
  • Supporting M&A decisions through feasibility and risk assessments
  • Conducting site visits to engage stakeholders and assess local constraints

Beyond project delivery, I attended major industry events including the National Onshore Wind Conference 2024, All-Energy 2025, and Green Energy Awards nights. These broadened my professional network and gave me exposure to emerging technologies and trends.

This whole experience has not only strengthened my technical and project management skills but also enhanced my ability to communicate complex ideas and collaborate across disciplines.

I’m grateful to my colleagues for their guidance and support, and I look forward to applying these new skills and insights as I return to the University of Liverpool to complete my integrated Master’s in Mechanical Engineering.”
