Liverpool Intern: Jamie

In this post, Jamie gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his time as a Liverpool Intern at Jamescape.
Starting with Scapegoat
I was lucky enough to start my internship just in time for Jamescape's annual Scapegoat conference, which not only turned out to be a perfect opportunity to get to know the teams of both Jamescape and Harker, but also ended up being one of the many highlights of my time here, as it was an incredibly fun experience.
Scapegoat involved many different activities, including an icebreaker session, productive and insightful workshops, and even Lightning Rounds, which involved everyone giving a presentation about a topic that interested them within a strict timeframe of only 3 minutes! My Lightning Round was about the positive impact that training Muay Thai has had on the rest of my life, now including the internship, as it has given me the resilience and self-belief that helps me persevere through most challenges I face. Though I was a bit uneasy at first, everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly, and I immediately felt like part of the team.
Jumping into web design
Following Scapegoat, I was then set to begin my project task, which would be to update the Jamescape website to better reflect what they currently offer, more specifically I started building an EDI (Equality, Diversity & Inclusion) Services section of the website. This would involve me using Next.js and React, both of which I was completely unfamiliar with. However, I managed to grasp a good understanding of both of them quite quickly, and it was not long until I was getting straight into designing the EDI section of the website, which I really enjoyed!
After learning React and Next.js through online courses, I was able to implement many features into the website including informative cards, buttons, a testimonial section and a hall of fame section! Being brand new to it all, there were definitely challenges along the way, such as not quite understanding how things worked straight away, or things not working how they should’ve been for reasons I couldn’t instantly find.
One of the persistent issues I faced during development was getting the Disability Confident Level buttons to work, as every time I would fix an issue such as the formatting or functionality, another issue would pop up, and it was becoming a struggle to find a solution to all issues at once. I did eventually fix the buttons completely and I am proud of how they turned out in the end, even with different outline colours for each accreditation Level that matches the brand for the respective Level. I found that each time I managed to solve problems, I furthered my own personal understanding and skills, and it was incredibly rewarding to look back and see how far I had came!
My personal skillset and ability, particularly in web design using Next.js and React, has massively improved and I now have a much greater confidence in not only my ability to work on future projects using those languages, but also in my own ability to be able to pick new development tools up and learn them well enough to make high quality projects that work with them.
The end of my internship
It turns out that when you really do enjoy your work, it does go by fast, and such was the case for my 80 hours at Jamescape. Coming into the office everyday and working alongside both Jamescape and Harker staff was incredibly fun and rewarding, as I was able to have a laugh with the team whilst also engaging in productive work, and I felt that it has definitely benefitted me not just this summer but for the future too.
This is an extremely talented and welcoming company and I am grateful to the entire team for assisting me throughout this internship, and also to James Barber and Zack Walker for letting me know about this opportunity.
Thank you also to the University of Liverpool’s Careers and Employability team for funding and supporting me throughout this internship.
I wish both Jamescape and Harker the best for the future and I hope to see the team again soon!
