Liverpool Intern: Chloe

Posted on: 7 August 2025 by Richard Finch in Student experiences

Chloe, a second-year Economics student, recently completed a Liverpool Interns placement with Liverpool University Press. We asked her to share her experience.

Can you tell us a bit about what your internship involved?

My role at LUP was to assist in the completion of the onboarding process for the University of Michigan Press, the University of Georgia Press, and Michigan State University Press. This involved tasks handling metadata to share with the UK’s leading library supplier, Gardeners, load data into Amazon to release books to the market, update the LUP website, and upload eBooks to LUP’s website.

How did you find the application process?

The application process for the Liverpool Interns scheme included an application, requiring a CV and cover letter, giving me more experience in writing tailored cover letters, something I haven’t had much practice at. Then there was an online interview which mainly tested my commercial awareness of LUP and questioned how my skillset aligned to the job role.

This has prepared me for the future as I look to apply to graduate jobs, it has shown the importance of company research and nailing down your skills relevant to the role. It has also made me realise that the Career Studio is such a useful tool when it comes to applications, as this greatly assisted me in writing my CV and cover letter.

What parts of your day-to-day role did you enjoy the most?

In my role, I enjoy engaging with like-minded, determined people in a professional setting, and getting insights into all the departments at LUP. The distribution services team taught me so much whilst I was there, beyond the scope of my intern role. I enhanced my hard skills (such as my ability in MS Excel) as well as my soft skills such as time management, communication and teamwork.

How has your internship helped you to develop as a working professional?

I have become much more efficient during my internship, being able to handle greater workload, balancing exam season as well as the job role. It has given me practical, professional experience, closing the gap between my academic background and real-world experience.

How has the Liverpool Interns programme supported you on your career journey?

Moving forward, the experience I have had with the Liverpool interns programme has provided me with a new foundation of knowledge, regarding university presses and the importance of open access, but also increased my confidence and will play a big role in future job roles. It has connected me with a future temporary work opportunity at LUP too, which couldn’t have been possible without Liverpool Interns. Over my time with LUP, I have acquired many new skills and strengthened existing ones, increasing my employability as I look to apply to graduate roles in the future.
