Biomedicine graduate Harshita Jain shares how her time at the University of Liverpool helped her kickstart her career in the UK, leading to a Master’s in Immunology at King’s College London.
What do you like the most about Liverpool?
Liverpool has been my home for the past three years, so it’s hard to pick just one thing I love about it. Both the city and the university offer a unique sense of diversity and vibrancy. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in Liverpool’s rich culture while meeting people from so many different backgrounds.
As an international student, I truly appreciated how welcoming and lively the city is. Whether it was taking a casual walk to the Albert Dock, shopping at Liverpool ONE, attending events or relaxing at Sefton Park, there was always something to explore and enjoy. Liverpool has a special charm that makes you feel at home no matter where you’re from.
What is your graduate journey and how did you land on your current job or Postgraduate degree?
When I first started my Biomedicine degree at the University of Liverpool, I wasn’t entirely sure what path I wanted to take next. It all felt like a blur - so many possibilities, yet no clear direction; Should I go for a master’s? Apply for a job? Jump straight into a PhD? As a first-year student, I knew I had time to figure it out, but the uncertainty was still there.
By my second year, things started to take shape. The employability modules, along with discussions with my academic advisor and friends, helped me explore my options. Biomedicine is a broad field, covering various scientific disciplines, and as I delved deeper into the course, I discovered my keen interest in disease mechanisms and treatments.
When third year arrived, everything became more real. I knew I wanted to work in the field, but I also felt the need to further develop my scientific knowledge and research skills. My interest in how the body defends itself against illness and the mechanisms behind diseases led me to focus on immunology.
Alongside my studies, I’ve always had a creative side. I love working on freelance projects, designing logos, scientific posters, and presentations. I’ve always had a keen interest in presenting data professionally and ensuring clarity in communication. While this isn’t my full-time job, I love dedicating my time to creative work. It’s a great way to combine my passion for science with design.
I explored different universities across the UK and internationally, carefully selecting a few programs that aligned with my interests. That journey led me to where I am today—pursuing a Master’s in Immunology at King’s College London and working as part of a research lab. I’m excited for what the future holds and eager to continue making an impact in this field.
How did the University of Liverpool help you in terms of transition?
In my third year, I had the opportunity to take part in the University of Liverpool’s inaugural NeuroDiversity Symposium, where I created a poster showcasing the support the university provides. Winning the Best Poster Award was a defining moment for me. It boosted my confidence immensely and gave me a real sense of achievement.
The Careers Team also played a key role in my journey. During my second year, as I was exploring my options, they guided me on how to navigate my next steps. Their support in building my CV and LinkedIn profile was invaluable, helping me gain the professional skills necessary for the next stage of my career.
What are your advice for current students and graduate?
It’s completely normal to feel uncertain at first, but give it time - you’ll find yourself in the right place at the right time. During my undergraduate years, there were moments when I wasn’t sure if I was on the right path or if I was making the right choices. But looking back, I realized that every experience, even the uncertain ones, contributed to my growth.
The journey itself is valuable. You’ll learn so much, not just from lectures, but from academic professionals, students, and the overall experience that the University of Liverpool provides. Trust the process, stay open to opportunities, allow yourself to grow along the way, and most importantly, have fun!
