Student graduation

Emma Rylands is a BSc Biological and Medical Sciences who now works as a Business Development Manager for GlucoRx.

HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

I completed a foundation year with the University of Liverpool as my A-Levels took a dip. I was told in sixth form that my grades weren’t good enough for any science related degree. I knew I wanted to be in the science industry, and so I knew I needed to do everything I could to get there and prove to myself that I can do it! After an extremely tough couple of years, I managed to graduate with a 2:1 degree is Biological and Medical Sciences.

I had planned to take a year out after graduating, however, some opportunities you cannot let pass! I saw a graduate opening for a medical sales representative for the North West. I truly didn’t think my application would be successful as I didn’t have any medical sales experience, but after a tough 2 rounds of interviews I was successful!

It’s amazing what you can achieve when you remove the negative thoughts of others and sometimes yourself! You fight for what you want to achieve because you are the only person who knows your potential.

YOUR FAVOURITE EXPERIENCE AS PART OF YOUR ROLE?

Everything about my current role I LOVE. I’ve always been in sales previously (in retail and hospitality). I wanted to combine my love of science and my love for sales. Medical sales was the perfect fit for me.

Every single day is different and each day opens a new opportunity. I meet a different person everyday and do what I do best which is talking to people and building relationships!

THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR GRADUATE JOURNEY?

The most challenging part was definitely my undiagnosed ADHD. I was in the primary stages of diagnosis throughout my whole degree so therefore couldn’t access the support that would have helped me.

I struggled particularly before exams trying to revise. I would get brain paralysis where I was unable to do anything at all. The only thing I was able to do was sleep. If I was awake I would stress about how much I wanted to do but physically couldn’t.

Each time we had results from previous exams I would do well. But not as well as I knew I could do. However, I ploughed through each and every time. There were times I wanted to throw in the towel, I’ll be honest. But I knew I could do it deep down and took each day as they came.

Graduating from the University of Liverpool was truly the best day of my life so far. I did it all for myself as I knew I could!

TOP THREE TIPS FOR OTHER STUDENTS?

1. Put your all into what you love.

2. Work hard, not for anyone else but yourself.

3. Most importantly, never EVER give up.
