In April 2021 Morgan completed a 4-week digital micro-internship with Mindless Academy. In this blog post she talks about what she did on the internship and how it has benefitted her.
Can you describe the internship programme that you successfully completed?
Because the internship was only four weeks long and was conducted entirely online it was perfect for me as it meant that I didn’t have to worry about travel or accommodation costs, and I could continue my university studies alongside the internship.
Each week I was given a campaign topic where I had to write an article that would eventually be published on Mindless Mag’s website. These would form part of Mindless Mag’s ‘Fashion + Stuff That Matters’ ethos. The campaigns I worked on included Fashion + The Red Carpet, Fashion + Our Oceans, Fashion + Plastic, and Fashion + Mental Health.
I was given so much guidance and support throughout the internship. Each week, as well as my article brief, I received a mindset coaching video and a guide teaching me about a new aspect of writing. I therefore learned the basics of WordPress, the science of SEO, the art of storytelling, and how to professionally edit my own work. I also received feedback from the editor regarding my articles each week.
How did you find out about the internship?
I received an email from the Careers & Employability department at the University of Liverpool.
It’s so important to read the emails they send out regarding employability opportunities, because whilst not all of them will be to your liking, you may find the perfect fit. I certainly did.
Do you have any top tips to share with future and current students about how you got hired and how completing this opportunity has benefited you from an employability perspective?
With Mindless Academy in particular, I felt they really valued honesty and enthusiasm. I applied for the internship without much knowledge of the fashion industry, but knowing that I was incredibly passionate about writing and social issues. I therefore really conveyed this passion in my application, along with my eagerness to improve my writing skills.
You don’t need to know everything, you just need to want to learn!
I really feel that completing this internship will strengthen my employability prospects. I learned key skills which I can add to my CV and LinkedIn page, I gained confidence in my abilities and learned relaxation techniques to deal with stress, and I now have a portfolio of published articles to show future potential employers.
