Centre for Alternative Technology

On the 6th May Masters and PhD students from the School of Architecture visited the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) at Machynlleth, Wales. CAT has been promoting sustainable architecture design for over 40 years, and the students had a guided tour of the site from Pat Borer, whose architectural practice produced the elegant rammed earth Shepperd Lecture Theatre at CAT. Professor Steve Sharples, Director of the MSc programme in Sustainable Environmental Design in Architecture at Liverpool, organised the visit and commented “Despite some terrible weather, the students really enjoyed the trip and found the CAT site very interesting, especially the examples of straw bale and rammed earth buildings”.
