A group of twenty Master and PhD students, accompanied by Dr David Chow and Professor Steve Sharples, recently visited the Lancaster Cohousing development at Forgebank. This is a carbon-neutral cohousing development consisting of 41 dwellings built to the German Passivhaus standard. It is one of the largest Passivhaus developments in the UK. It combines community living with sustainable building techniques, energy saving technologies and renewable energy generation.

All the electricity used in the houses is generated from an array of solar PV panels and a hydroelectric scheme using two turbines located in the nearby River Lune.
