Genesys Life Sciences Scholarship

The University of Liverpool and Genesys Legacy Project Ltd are pleased to offer a competitive scholarship to support undergraduate Life Sciences students from socio-economically underrepresented backgrounds. Applicants will need to be ordinarily resident in the UK and undertaking an undergraduate programme starting in the academic year 2024/25.

Genesys Legacy Project Ltd is a charity founded by Liverpool Alumni, working to achieve a range of goals including the advancement of scientific knowledge in the UK. The Genesys Life Sciences Scholarship supports them in this goal by providing an award to a future Life Scientist.

The award

This scholarship will provide a maintenance stipend of £4,500 for three years of your course. The Genesys Life Sciences Scholarship may in held in conjunction with other applicable University of Liverpool Widening Participation bursaries.

Eligibility criteria

You must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for a scholarship:

  1. Be studying in Year 0 or Year 1 of a full-time undergraduate degree programme at the University of Liverpool, commencing study in the 2024/25 academic year.
  2. This must be your first degree, you must not already hold a degree or equivalent higher-level qualification.
  3. Be studying a Life Sciences programme within the University of Liverpool Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Please note, that clinical courses are not eligible to apply for this scholarship. If you are unsure if you are enrolled on an eligible course, please contact us to check before applying.
  4. Come from a home where neither parent attended university in the UK or abroad. If one or more parent is currently studying for their first degree or graduated from their first degree within the last five years, you will be considered eligible under this criteria.
  5. Have been assessed for fee status as a ‘home’ student, or expect to be assessed as a ‘home’ student.
  6. Have a household income of less than £25,000 per annum.
  7. Have made an application to Student Finance England. We will seek confirmation that you will be in receipt of full financial support for the 2024/25 academic year. Please ensure you have given consent to share your information with the University, as this will be used to determine eligibility.
  8. We will also look at where you live (postcode) and other measures of educational challenges, often referred to as socio-economic metrics. Further information on widening access and contextual admissions at the University of Liverpool and how we assess candidates.

Completing your application

To help us get to know you, we will ask you for two short personal statements of up to 4,000 characters. Statement one asks you:

  • Why the scholarship would be beneficial to your studies
  • What achievements, academically and personally, are you most proud of? This could include overcoming a challenging personal circumstance. There is no right or wrong answer, we are keen to hear your personal story

Statement two asks:

  • What areas of life sciences are you particularly interested in?
  • What extra-curriculars, or experiences outside your school/college study have you taken part in, related to life sciences?
  • How your education would be of future benefit to the life sciences community, or society as a whole?

You may wish to write your statements in Word or another software in advance of completing this form and copy it over.

We will also ask for your personal details, including your full name, University student ID number, home address, programme of study, name of the school or college you previously attended and your email address. We will ask you to confirm that:

  • You have applied, been assessed for and expect to be in receipt of the maximum level of support from the Government through Student Finance England, for tuition fees and maintenance loans, and you have provided consent to share your information with the University.
  • This is your first undergraduate degree programme and you have not started a degree programme previously

Decisions

A panel of representatives from the University of Liverpool will assess applications before making a final decision. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in December 2024.
