I need to improve my English and have taken an IELTS test. My score is below the course requirement. Can I still get the scholarship?
You will only be eligible to apply for the Asylum Seeker Scholarship if you have made an application to the University of Liverpool and have an offer for a place on a course. To find out what the minimum IELTS requirement is for your chosen course, please visit the relevant course webpage. If you do not currently have the required IELTS score, your offer of a place at the University and any subsequent offer of a scholarship, will be dependent upon you obtaining the required IELTs score before the UCAS deadline of 31 August 2024; this is the date by which applicants have to meet the conditions of their offer. If you do not achieve the required IELTs score by this date, the University will not accept you on to the course, and you will not be eligible to receive the scholarship.
What are my chances of getting the Asylum Seeker Scholarship if I apply?
There are up to three scholarships available, and we receive a high number of applications. The scholarship is very competitive and you should attempt to complete your application to the very highest standard if you wish to be seriously considered. Student Finance England have told me that I’m not eligible for student loans, but I’m appealing the decision. Can I still apply for the Asylum Seeker Scholarship?
If you are not eligible for loans from Student Finance England, and meet the other criteria, you can apply to the Asylum Seeker Scholarship. If you appeal against their decision not to fund you, and are subsequently successful in receiving loans from Student Finance England, you will not be eligible to receive this scholarship.
I am currently studying at another UK university, but would like to transfer to Liverpool and apply for the Asylum Seeker Scholarship.
We only accept applications from students beginning a new course at Liverpool. You cannot apply for the scholarship if you are transferring to Liverpool.
Am I able to apply for the Asylum Seeker Scholarship if I get a place at Liverpool through clearing or adjustment?
We will contact all applicants by the end of June 2025 to let them know if they have been successful or not. Therefore, we are not able to consider applicants who are coming to Liverpool through clearing or adjustment.
I would like to apply for the scholarship but I cannot afford the UCAS application fee to apply for my chosen course. Do you offer any funding for the UCAS application?
No, unfortunately there is no funding available for this.
I have applied to study a clinical programme (Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Science) at the University of Liverpool. Can I apply to the Asylum Seeker Scholarship?
No, you cannot apply if you are undertaking a clinical programme (Dentistry, Health Sciences. Medicine or Veterinary Science). You may wish to contact the Westheimer Trust who offer a limited number of scholarships to asylum seekers who wish to study for a first degree or professional qualification in the field of healthcare: http://swtrust.org.uk/
I have undertaken undergraduate and/or postgraduate level study in my home country. Can I apply to the Asylum Seeker Scholarship?
No, the Asylum Seekers Scholarship is only available for students undertaking undergraduate study for the first time, or whose qualifications are below that of UK bachelor degree level.
I will be undertaking a postgraduate degree programme at the University of Liverpool. Can I apply to the Asylum Seeker Scholarship?
No, you cannot apply if you are undertaking a postgraduate programme. Only those studying undergraduate courses can apply for the Asylum Seekers Scholarship.
Selection process
This is a competitive process and not all applications will be successful. A panel of senior members of staff will select the strongest applications and will be looking for the following:
- Applicant has provided a clear rationale for applying for a course at the University of Liverpool
- Applicant has clearly articulated future ambitions and how these goals relate to the degree they have applied for
- Applicant has invested time in to their local community or contributed to school/college life, or has invested time in undertaking additional activities to further develop their knowledge/learning/skills in their desired area of study.
Priority may be given to applicants who have been educated in the local area (Merseyside).
If your application is taken forward, we may invite you for an interview to clarify the information you have provided in your application.
