Bracken Data Science Scholarship

The University of Liverpool is pleased to offer the Bracken Data Science Scholarship, made possible by the generosity of Mike Bracken. This scholarship will support students from the Liverpool City Region to pursue postgraduate education in Data Science.

The award

The scholarship will be open to one student in the 2024/25 academic year and is worth £5,000. Students must be studying a postgraduate course in Data Science, or a closely related subject within the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science.

Applicants must be ordinarily resident in the UK and be commencing postgraduate study for the first time, in the academic year 2024/25.

If you are awarded the scholarship, you’ll also have the opportunity to be mentored by Mike Bracken.

Eligibility criteria

Please check your eligibility before making an application for this scholarship. Awards may be withdrawn if we later become aware that successful students have not met the eligibility criteria or have provided false information.

Applicants must satisfy all of the following to be considered for this scholarship:

  1. Permanently reside in the Liverpool City Region.
  2. Have accepted an offer of a place at the University of Liverpool for an eligible postgraduate course, to commence study in the 2024/25 academic year. Eligible courses are those in Data Science, or a closely related subject within the School of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science.
  3. This must be your first postgraduate degree, and you must not already hold an equivalent qualification.
  4. You must have made an application to Student Finance England for a Postgraduate Master’s Loan.
  5. You must have been assessed for fee status as a 'Home' student, or expect to be assessed as a 'Home' student.
  6. You must have a household income of below £25,000 per annum.

The application process

Personal statement

To help us to get to know you, we will ask you for a personal statement of 4000 characters explaining:

  • Why the scholarship would be beneficial to your studies
  • How it would help you to achieve your academic and career goals
  • How your education would be of future benefit to your community and/or society
  • What achievements, academically and personally, are you most proud of? This could include overcoming a challenging personal circumstance. There is no right or wrong answer. We are keen to hear your personal story.

Applications must be submitted by 5pm on 1st August 2024.

Decisions

A panel of representatives from the University of Liverpool will assess applications and compile a shortlist of the strongest applications which will be reviewed by Mike Bracken.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by the first week of September 2024.
