Institute of Biology of Southern Seas (IBSS) Ukraine

IBSS is the largest Ukrainian marine research centre, conducting investigations into the biology, ecology and protection of the sea, multiple aspects of marine ecosystem biodiversity and dynamics, and new biotechnologies and methods for integral coastal zone management. Cherishing the 135 year-old classical academic traditions, IBSS increases and improves the scientific potential and welcomes international scientific co-operation. The present IBSS includes 12 scientific departments, the Aquarium-Museum, scientific library, the editorial and publishing department, and the R/V Professor Vodyanitsky; the Branch in Odessa has 4 research departments. Main research trends on which the scientific interests concentrate are: the adaptation, transformation and evolutionary mechanisms, which develop in marine and oceanic systems in response to global climate change and anthropogenic impacts; the hydro biological and biotechnological problems related to integral coastal zone management; the methods and technologies for effective environmental control of biota, for assessment and forecasting of marine environment quality and the environmental risks to be met in intensive sea use zones; the biodiversity in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and the steps, which would ensure preservation of the diversity. The large-scale investigations of the World’s Oceans that IBSS has been making for many decades has produced scientific evidence that has contributed to the world’s knowledge and the advancement of marine ecology in Ukraine.
