WP9 Overview

MEFEPO Dissemination

WP9    Objectives

  • Identify a broad range of stakeholder contacts in the region (including fishers, policy makers,
environmentalists, academics, managers and fish processors).
  • Produce regular updates on the project with the production of an annual project newsletter for each
    region and a website.
  • Send out the summary document from WP1 suitable for non-scientists in the most relevant
    language(s) for the region).
  • Make at least two presentations to the relevant RACs during the term of the project, and contribute to their working groups.
  • Regular press releases to national and fishing press and local press in fishing areas.
  • Disseminate the regional FEPs developed under WP7.

Description of work

The fishing community is a difficult audience to engage for a variety of reasons, including their disparate
groupings and priorities, and the very high potential for ‘stakeholder fatigue’ due to their involvement in
repeated stakeholder consultations on similar, if not identical, topics. However, EFEP was the first regional
scale project to engage stakeholders for the purposes of developing an ecosystem approach in the fisheries
so there is a large body of stakeholders who already recognise our work. These contacts will be fully utilised
during MEFEPO.

The approach used by MEFEPO is pragmatic and based on a mixture of targeted press items and the
development of products of direct relevance, and therefore potential interest, to the fishing community. All
MEFEPO partners are involved in all tasks.

In addition to these tasks, many of the partners are active members of ICES Working Groups and Advisory
Committees (ULIV, IPIMAR-INRB, IMARES, MI, CEFAS, IMAR/DOP and IEO). The MEFEPO team also
includes the ICES Vice-President (Carmela Porteiro, IEO). MEFEPO partners are also members of EFARO,
EAFE, STECF and ICCAT. MEFEPO outputs will be disseminated directly through our partners’ involvement
with these organisations.
