Undergraduate students participate in Work Shadowing project

Management School students have taken part in this year’s Work Shadowing project, which was introduced several years ago as part of the School’s experiential learning focus, to afford undergraduates an additional opportunity to gain experience in a professional working environment and to expand their networks.

Students spent a day at a local business office and met with a professional with experience in the student’s area of interest or study.

Participating businesses represented a wide range of sectors: Professional and Business Services; Sustainability; Finance; Organisational Design; Real Estate; Visitor Economy; and Public Relations.

Eleanor Shoebridge, BA Marketing, commented: “I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to complete my work shadowing. It was a true pleasure to meet the team. I was given a very warm welcome and I gained vital exposure to the corporate environment.

"I would highly recommend the Work Shadowing Opportunity to everyone. This experience has taught me to take each opportunity you are given as it may lead to an unexpected yet exciting path.”

The School’s Employability Team and External Engagement Team worked together on the project to match students with volunteers from the business community.

Hazel Kennedy, External Engagement Manager, said, “We are always grateful to our business volunteers who give up a day of their valuable time to support our students and help prepare the workforce of the future. The insights and experience they share with our students are hugely beneficial.”

Tony Murphy, Employability Team Leader, said, “The Work Shadowing project is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain real-world experience of a professional working environment and apply that to their career aspirations.”
