Volunteers’ Week 2022: A time to thank our alumni volunteers

Published on

The Management School is celebrating Volunteers’ Week along with large charities and small grassroots organisations. This is a time to celebrate the contributions volunteering makes in our communities, so we would like to say a huge thank you to our volunteers.

The School has been able to hold alumni sessions on campus again following the easing of lockdown restrictions and we were very excited to welcome graduates back for in-person events.

A thank you from one of our students

First year BA Marketing with a Year in Industry student, Georgie Clay, attended an ULMS Extra Employability Week panel with alumni now working for Auto Trader, ClearScore, Ministry of Justice, EY and Avant Garde Dentistry.

Georgie said: "Looking ahead to applying for placements and graduate schemes is something I feel excited about, so listening to alumni share their career paths and experiences was great. During the What can I do with my degree? session, I felt particularly inspired by Emily Cornwall's (BA Marketing with a Year in Industry 2019) position as a Senior Social Media Manager as I see myself potentially going into a similar field in the future. All panellists shared great tips and advice that will be vital for my journey to securing a placement for my third year and I am grateful to have had an insight into what that journey will entail."

Why volunteer for the School?

One Employability Week panellist, Joseph Parikh (BA Accounting and Finance 2019), now working in Audit at KPMG, praised the support he received from alumni when he was a student last Volunteers’ Week. Joseph attended ULMS Extra’s ‘Big Four Boot-camp,’ using it as a springboard for gaining one-to-one guidance from a graduate ahead of his interview with KPMG. On volunteering as a graduate, Joseph said:

“During my time at university I benefited from listening to alumni talk about their career paths and the complexities around entering their respective fields. I got involved in Employability Week to give students insights and practical advice centred around shaping their career. This opportunity has enabled me to get involved with mentoring current students and coming back to university also allowed me to catch up with lecturers. I encourage other alumni to consider getting involved with volunteering!”

Other volunteering activity

Our volunteers have also been busy supporting postgraduate students, for example, joining a Virtual Coffee Chat with ULMS Masters alumni, where students spoke with alumni now working for BT, Airbus, GC Business Growth Hub and a PhD Candidate and Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University.

As well as supporting with employability sessions, alumni kindly share their career stories by providing case studies for current and prospective students and fellow alumni. Graduates also help with the behind-the-scenes activities that support the School’s accreditation priorities, sharing their thoughts with accreditors to help grow our international reputation.

We are grateful (this week and all year!) for our community of dedicated alumni – thank you.
