Alejandro Amunategui graduated from the Football Industries MBA (FIMBA) programme in 2021. Currently working at the Football Association, he has previously worked as a Commercial Manager for a Sport NGO in Chile, where sport was used as a mechanism to steer children from vulnerable communities away from drug use and also combat obesity. Alejandro is also one of the founding members of the Asociación de Management Deportivo de Chile, which seeks to enhance and promote the development of the country's sports management industry.

Speaking about his work-based project, Alejandro reflects on his experience:

“The final module of the Football Industries MBA programme at the University of Liverpool Management School consists of a work-based project (WBP) which allows students to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained during the programme in an organisational setting. I was delighted when I found out that I had secured a WBP with the prestigious Women in Football (WIF), with whom I had worked previously as a Commercial Assistant on a part time basis.

“WIF are a network of professionals, working in and around the football industry who support and champion their peers. They aim to celebrate and promote women’s achievements and talent and challenge discrimination by improving women’s representation at all levels of the game. I undertook the project, for which the focus was on a strategically important aspect of their future planning.

“It was an absolute privilege to work with an organisation such as WIF, who share my passion for football. I wanted to undertake a project which would enable me to further enhance my experience in the sporting industry and also give me the opportunity to utilise my existing knowledge and expertise to really make a difference. The team was extremely helpful in supporting me with my project and providing me with the information and context I needed to make it a success. The skills I have learnt will be invaluable as I strive to further enhance my career in football. They have enabled me to reach personal and team goals at a high level.”

Professor Sue Bridgewater, who supervised Alejandro’s project said: “The project was very well received at WIF and went on to inform discussions about future planning. This was an excellent opportunity for Alejandro to get hands-on consultancy experience which he can now apply in the real world.”
