Second year BA Marketing with a Year in Industry student, Hannah Kirtley, gained valuable work experience through graduate, Ross Hetherington (BA Business Studies 2013), Founder and Director of Snapify Marketing, helping her to secure the placement year of her dreams. Hannah will join The Walt Disney Company as a Retail Marketing Intern in June 2022. We caught up with Hannah and Ross to find out more about Hannah’s time with Snapify Marketing, which took place remotely after Hannah’s first year of university.

(Hannah) What activities did you get involved with during your work experience with Snapify Marketing? How did this support your Year in Industry applications?

I was tasked with reimagining Snapify’s own social accounts to provide an example for their clients. This involved curating memes, ‘meet the team’ posts and engaging LinkedIn posts that target businesses looking to make use of a marketing agency (their target customer).

Towards the end of the week Ross sent me client briefs from his actual clients to present to him, which involved creating engaging content for one of their clients. I loved creating ideas for real clients and learning the complexities behind social media marketing. I loved learning from Ross the steps behind his own personal brand on LinkedIn to see the thought that goes into every single post. I was given one major tip: when posting on LinkedIn, try to ask a question people are interested in at the end of each post, as this creates an interesting comments section and allows for further activity to be drawn to your profile.

I believe this work experience was valuable in securing my marketing placement at the Walt Disney Company due to the organisational nature of the role. It showed to the employer that I was able to successfully work within a marketing team and have the confidence to put my own personal ideas out there to a company director, with some of the ideas being pursued. The experience gave me a new level of professionalism and was another talking point in the interview process that impressed Disney.

I would love to encourage other University of Liverpool alumni to provide work experience opportunities for students as it provided me with relevant experience that reinforced my passion for marketing.

(Ross) What did Snapify get out of having Hannah take part in work experience?

We were really impressed with Hannah's enthusiasm when she first contacted us to see if we had any work experience opportunities. It was this enthusiasm and curiosity that shone through during her time with us, so it was no surprise to hear she had secured a placement year with Disney. It was really refreshing to have someone join the team with a completely different perspective as it's so important for all businesses, but even more so in marketing, to make sure you are keeping up with the latest trends and best practices, and not just sticking to what you know.
