On Thursday 15 April Shalom Lloyd, MBA (Online) Graduate, delivered a webinar on ‘Building a Sustainable Business’ as part of the ULMS Masterclass webinar series.

Shalom Lloyd is an award-winning entrepreneur, pharmaceutical professional and mother of five. Educated at the Ukrainian Academy of Pharmacy, Shalom also gained an MBA from the University of Liverpool in 2010. During the Masterclass, Shalom shared her inspiring life and career story. She gave an insight into starting and developing her two businesses which are underpinned by both sustainability and diversity.

As the Founder and Managing Director of Naturally Tribal Skincare – a company that makes natural remedies using raw, 100% natural and sustainable ingredients from Africa – Shalom talked about how her idea for a natural skincare company came about after the birth of her twins in 2014. Her son, Joshua had severe eczema and often ‘scratched until he bled’. She couldn’t bear the idea of smothering his sensitive new skin with chemical emollients and steroids so she turned to her African roots and natural products such as shea butter. After creating home-made remedies in her kitchen for Joshua, the idea for Naturally Tribal Skincare was born.

Seven years after the birth of her twins, Naturally Tribal now employs local women in the Kingdom of Essan, Nigeria and focuses on the ethos of ‘trade not aid’ and using sustainable, ethically sourced, natural African materials.

If a successful skincare company wasn’t enough, Shalom is also Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Emerging Markets Quality Trials, an organisation focused on the inclusion of patients of African descent into clinical trials. During the webinar, Shalom shared how the work of eMQT aims to transform healthcare research in Africa as although the patients of African descent make up 17% of the world’s population (over 1 Billion), Black People are underrepresented in clinical trials globally, reported as less than 3% by the Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS).

The Management School would like to thank Shalom for giving up her time and delivering a hugely inspiring and uplifting Masterclass.
