Could your organisation offer a placement to a Management School student?

Year in Industry opportunities

The Management School offers the opportunity to undertake a Year in Industry on all of its undergraduate programmes.

This placement year is taken during the third year of study and usually lasts around 40 weeks, with some students working for the full year.  It is a full-time, paid opportunity with the average salary standing at £18,065 (Glassdoor, 2020) although this varies by location.  In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, placements can be carried out entirely remotely and students have adapted well to virtual placements.

Employing a placement student can bring many benefits to organisations including:

  • Recruit high calibre, enthusiastic students
  • Access to a fresh perspective and new ideas
  • ‘Test run’ a graduate employee
  • Fill a skills gap
  • Resource a project

An increasing number of Management School students have secured roles with their placement provider after graduation. However, data from the Institute of Student Employers’ annual student recruitment survey found that employers provided 25 per cent fewer placements during 2019-2020 than in the previous year, following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The impact of completing a placement year is transformational for students. As well as picking up skills and experience which are invaluable to their future career, students benefit from a huge increase in confidence.  Seeing real-world business scenarios first hand also enables students to better understand the theory covered during their final year of studies, which correlates with the higher marks achieved by year in industry participants.
