The impact of coronavirus on sports

The Management School’s Centre for Sports Business has a global reputation in the business of sport, undertaking research in a number of disciplines. Academics from the Centre have been assessing the impact COVID-19 is having on sporting industries.

Dr Daniel Parnell, Senior Lecturer in Sports Business, co-authored two articles for The Football Collective discussing the threat the pandemic posed to Euro 2020 and later, once the tournament was confirmed as postponed, looking at the uncertainty surrounding its ability to go ahead in 2021.

Dr Parnell also featured in interviews on BBC Radio Merseyside and The Newsmakers where he discussed some of the challenges football clubs will face as a result of COVID-19, including financial difficulties and job insecurity for matchday employees.

Kieran Maguire, Lecturer in Football Finance, co-hosts the Price of Football podcast and has produced in depth discussions on the football business. He recently provided insight into the financial impact COVID-19 will have on football clubs, particularly smaller ones, during an interview for the Football CFB podcast.  Kieran has also wrote for The TelegraphMail on Sunday and The Times looking at how the suspension of English football could force clubs to act more financially responsible.

Last weekend he was a guest talking about the impact of the virus on football on Sky Sports News and 5 Live Sport.

As the situation with the global pandemic progresses over the coming months, the Centre for Sports Business will continue to monitor the challenges the sporting industry faces and its responses, providing invaluable insight where needed.
