Students complete work shadowing placements

A number of undergraduate students have recently completed work shadowing placements at various organisations.

The project, which was a pilot scheme, started in January and involved students being paired up with local businesses to gain insight into a professional working environment.

As not all businesses are able to offer internships or longer term placements, the work shadowing project helps to provide a suitable alternative.  Students are able to expand their network, develop their skills and learn about the profession they may be interesting in pursuing in the future.

The Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and Professional Liverpool supported the project by engaging with volunteer business leaders from the local area.

Feedback from the students who took part has been very positive.  One student visited local business Active Profile and said, “Everyone made me feel very welcome and people took the time out to speak to me about their departments. They also gave me the option to sit in on different meetings etc. which was a great opportunity.”

“They made me feel very welcome and took time out of their day to tell me about what they do. During the day, I was able to listen in to two phone meetings with different clients regarding their projects. I also carried out some research to help the team think of ideas for a launch party they were planning for a client.”

Lee Wainwright, Employability Projects Officer, said “Although work shadowing can be short in duration, it provides a boost to students’ employability by placing them in workplaces where they can build professional networks, learn about workplace organisation and professionalism, and possibly establish future opportunities for employment.”
