The Management School’s Agility Centre, in collaboration with the British Academy of Management, the HMRC Liverpool office and the Operational Research Society, organised a conference on Wednesday 12th December on ‘Applications of Big Data and Analytics’.

Current technological advances allow organisations to collect, store and analyse data in a manner that enables cost and time reductions, development of new products and services and in general a smarter decision making.  The conference aimed to inform participants of the value and benefits from utilising Big Data and Analytics by demonstrating successful applications across a variety of industries.

Speakers at the conference included; Claire Potter, Shakel Khan and Qasim Sultan, HMRC; Dr Shaibal Roy, PA Consulting Group; Dr Gopal Narayanamurthy and Professor Ian McHale, University of Liverpool; and Stuart Whittle, Weightmans LLP.

The organiser of the conference, Fotios Misopoulos, lecturer in Operations and Supply Chain Management, added:

"The event was very successful with approximately one hundred individuals attending. The vast majority of the participants were coming from organisations such as HMRC, NHS, universities, and of course many colleagues from different departments of the Management School as well as other Schools of the University. The audience was exposed to a variety of real world applications within different industries, and our two colleagues from the Operations and Supply Chain Management department presented their research on Big Data which generated great interest among participants."

Talks covered various topics including the required technology for Big Data applications, how Big Data Analytics can improve decision-making and insights into successful applications of Big Data analytics.

The Management School’s Agility Centre focuses on developing and applying advanced solutions on how resources and skills can be developed across technology-enhanced social and business networks to improve productivity, responsiveness and resilience.  It can support SMEs in developing and implementing strategies and solutions to prosper in the dynamic global digital and technological transformation.
