Jane Purdon, Head of Governance at UK Sport, visited the Management School to talk to students from the Football Industries MBA programme.

Jane previously worked as Club Secretary of Sunderland FC before joining the Premier League where she became Director of Governance.  During her time at the Premier League she was responsible for drafting and updating the rule book which “serves as a contract between the League, the Member Clubs and one another, defining the structure and running of the competition”.  In May 2015, Jane joined UK Sport as head of governance and leadership.

UK Sport is the strategic lead body for high performance sport in the UK and invests public money into the British Olympic and Paralympic teams.  Jane outlined some facts about the Olympics and gave students a breakdown of what the public funding is used for.  She also spoke about the ‘World Class Programme’ which identifies and develops talented athletes.

After the talk students were able to take part in a question and answer session to find out more about her experience and how the theory they are learning is applicable to real business examples in the sporting industry.
