Gabriela Zapata Román recently visited the Management School to talk to students on the International Development module.

Gabriela previously completed an MBA at the Management School and is now a researcher (PhD) at the Brooks Doctoral College. Her research is focused on inequality of opportunity and intergenerational mobility theories, which try to understand the sources of inequality and its persistence through generations. Gabriela has also coordinated and co-authored the Human Development Report for Greater Manchester, a publication of the European Work & Employment Research Centre of the Alliance Manchester Business School.

Gabriela spoke to students about her recent work with Greater Manchester local authorities and gave insight into how the study was carried out.  After outlining the challenges she faced, Gabriela spoke about how the findings can be used to help when creating policies.  She also explained the index used throughout the study and showed students how she worked it out which was particularly useful for anyone wanting to work in the public sector.

Dr Giulia Sirigu, lecturer for the International Development course, commented “Understanding how the Human Development Index is applied in different geographic areas is essential in order to consider how policies can be improved but also to understand the limitations and difficulties related to the application of these type of indices”
