Pupils from a local Merseyside School took part in the University of Liverpool Management School's "Learning to Make a Difference Challenge" 2017. Three teams from Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School were invited to the Management School on the 25th April to share their business ideas and find out more about the university.

The competition asked pupils to identify a need in their community, using their own business ideas to address the need and see what a difference they could make. In teams, pupils were asked to consider what the cost of the solution would be and what benefits would it bring.

As part of their visit to the university, the pupils were given the opportunity to work with Bloomberg Software in the Management School’s newly opened McKenzie Trading Floor. Current MSc Economics student, Oliver Websdell led the Bloomberg session which explained how current events and media can influence the stock market. Pupils were given a hands on tutorial which allowed them to search for business news on the state-of-the-art software.

Each team was given constructive feedback on their proposals by Director of Studies for Marketing, Paul Matthews. The panel was extremely impressed with the standard of entries from the school who were each awarded a certificate, vouchers and a powerbank for the quality and creativity of their business models. One team, whose idea was particularly impactful, won the Director’s Prize Award.
