Members of the Management School’s Centre for Sports Business recently visited Asia to promote, and raise awareness of the new MSc Sports Business, to be launched in September 2017.

The trips to Japan and South Korea looked to establish collaborative research relationships as well as providing an opportunity to meet prospective students, showcasing the work of the Centre for Sports Business as a global centre of excellence for sports and football business programmes, conducting cutting-edge research into business, economic and cultural aspects of sport.

As part of the trip to Japan in March, Director of Studies for MSc Sports Business, David Cockayne, delivered a talk at the British Council on ‘The Future of the Business of Sport’ which was attended by potential students, agents and people working within the sports industry. He also met with members of the British Chamber of Commerce responsible for various aspects of events management at the 2019 Rugby World Cup; Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games; and Kansai World Masters Games 2021.

Whilst in Japan, David visited a number of leading universities, specialising in aspects of the sports industry. This included Waseda University where he meet Professor Munehiko Harada who is leading Japan’s Sports Tourism and economic (re)development initiatives.  David also visited Juntendo University which will be the home of the U.S. Olympic Team during the Tokyo 2020 games. Here he met Professor of Sports Sociology, Yasuhiro Kudo and Professor Etsuko Ogasawara, Japan’s Executive Director for the National Centre of Research into ‘Women in Japanese Sport’.

David was invited to the Japanese Football Association where he met Kunji Matsuda, Director of Grassroots football development to discuss Japan’s ‘football for all’ initiative, supported by FIFA.

In April, as part of the British Council's Sport Week Relay in Seoul, South Korea, Senior Lecturer, Dr Sue Minten, accompanied by Dan Stephenson from the University of Liverpool’s International Recruitment and Relations Team, delivered a workshop introducing the Management School, highlighting its expertise in sports business. Sue followed with a lecture outlining the School’s new Sports Business MSc, which focussed on the Commercialisation of the Winter Olympics.

The event also included a session with alumnus of the University of Liverpool, Hyung Wook Seo, who graduated from the Football Industries MBA in 2004. He now has a successful career within the sports industry working as an MBC football commentator. Hyung provided an invaluable insight into the Football Industries MBA programme and discussed how it helped him in his career journey.
