International Business students to travel to Frankfurt in Spring 2018

Starting in 2017-18, a field trip will become an integral part of MKIB160 Global Capitalist Systems, a core module taken by all BA International Business students in first year.

The international trip in semester 2 will give students the opportunity to travel to a Continental European city for several days. The first trip, to take place for the 2017-18 academic year, will be to Frankfurt.

The purpose of the trip is to provide real world experience to reinforce the theoretical knowledge gained from study in Liverpool. This module, which is taken by all first-year International Business students, aims to introduce students to the economic and business development of the major industrialised nations since 1945 and the more recent rise of emerging economies.

Director of Studies for BA International Business, Dr Andrew Smith said: “This module is designed to introduce students to the idea that the British way of organising the economy isn't the only way of doing business. In our lectures, the German variety of capitalism is contrasted with the British variety of capitalism. That's a theme that has been part of this module for many years but we now want to allow students to go beyond the theory."

Student learning on this module will be assessed through a mixture of innovative methods. Students will produce a group report based on their research topic and fieldwork. Fieldwork will serve to impart the skills required for independent research as well as developing the students ability to engage in groupwork.  The module also aims to develop presentation skills and commercial awareness.

The trip will include a mixture of staff-led activities including tours and classes as well as student-led learning. The trip will be led by Dr Jennifer Johns, who has extensive experience in field trip teaching.
