ULMS hosts digital marketing masterclass with a local marketing agency

Undergraduate marketing students attended a “Digital Marketing Masterclass”, led by local digital agency owner, Phil Birss.

The “ULMS Extra” session gave current students an insight into the work that is carried out by Elephant Digital, a Liverpool based digital agency which specialises in digital marketing. Phil gave an insight into the workings of an agency and offered advice on how to make a CV stand out in a competitive industry.

Phil recommended that students utilise their time by learning additional practical skills including adobe creative and completing qualifications in AdWords and Analytics. He provided an overview of digital elements which complement the strategic aspects of the Marketing programme at the Management School. His presentation explored different types of media and how they can be utilised in marketing, the importance of branding and emphasised the importance of leading with ideas, especially in an agency environment. Phil discussed the pros and cons of agency and client careers, both options available to graduates looking to pursue a career in marketing.

Director of Studies for BA Marketing, Paul Matthews expressed the importance of accelerating the skills leant on the degree programme by undertaking practical experience and actively looking to enhance knowledge in the digital marketing sector.

BA Marketing alumna, Annie Mars-Jones returned to campus for the session. After securing an internship at Elephant Digital in 2016, she has recently been employed on a permanent basis.

On the importance of adding value to your degree with work experience, Annie said: “I believe that completing work experience during your studies adds substantial value to your degree. It shows employers that you are proactive and are eager to enter the work environment. It also gives you the opportunity to put the theory and strategy you’ve learnt in your degree into practice. The skills you learn will be invaluable, and it will give you taste of the working environment before finishing your degree”.
