Nicola Docking, Blogging workshop

Professional freelance blogger, Nicola Docking, delivered an interactive workshop to a group of students at the Management School today.

Nicola has a wealth of experience, having worked in various digital marketing roles, and was able to provide insightful advice to students about blog-writing styles. Using real world examples, Nicola explained the importance of students understandinf and having confidence in their opinions and writing style.

She explained how blogs differ to more traditional types of writing and that above all they should inform, influence or entertain the reader by demonstrating the blogger's own personality, professionalism and opinions. Consistency is also useful in helping the blogger create his/her own brand and style.

Nicola then talked about the need to research a subject or theme fully to form an opinion, as well as understand the intended audience and what time they will devote to reading the blog.

Students were invited to participate in an exercise and feed back on how they would approach a blog on a seasonal advertising campaign for a well-known department store.  Following the feedback session, Nicola then answered questions about blogging styles, business blogs, how to get into digital marketing, and how to set up a blog site.

Speaking about the workshop Nicola said, "It was fantastic to present to such an enthusiastic bunch of students who clearly already have a passion for blogs and blogging.  It's becoming such an important style of writing, particularly in the marketing industry, so it was great to discuss how students can understand themselves better as writers and have confidence in their opinions".
