University of Liverpool alumnus, Sir Robin Saxby, visited the Management School to deliver a guest lecture, “Start Ups: If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”

Sir Robin Saxby started his first business at just 13 years old, before going on to found ARM Holdings Plc, a multinational semiconductor and software design company which is now the market leader in designing and supplying processors for smartphones and tablets.

In his talk, Sir Robin shared the secrets of success, learned from a lifetime in entrepreneurial endeavour. He answered questions from the audience based on his own personal experience in the business world and offered advice to Management School students.

He explained that a successful business will have strong leader who is passionate about what they want to achieve, and a team which is united on agenda and can help to make that vision a reality. He encouraged diversity and extreme opinions in the workplace and suggested that debate was needed to reach a unanimous decision within a team.

He also spoke about changes in business with rapid developments in globalisation and technology over the last decade. He advised that the fundamentals of a successful business started with analysing your strengths and weaknesses to identify areas for improvement and change.

Sir Robin said “Anyone, anywhere can start a business and be successful if you have a bold enough vision.”
