University of Liverpool alumnus and entrepreneur, Tim Butler (BA Hons Business Economics 1994), is returning to Liverpool to present at the International Festival of Business as a finalist in the UK Open to Export Competition with his latest business venture, the Medical Stock Images Company (MSIC).

Tim runs the company with his wife, Joanna Culley who is a leading medical illustrator. Her work has been used by organisations as varied as Johnson & Johnson to the NHS and The Royal College of Surgeons to Harvard University. Their website allows people to search for very specific anatomical, medical and pathological illustrations using sophisticated search & filter functions.

On 30 June, Tim will return to Liverpool to present his business and export plan, before being scrutinised by an expert judging panel.  He said of the forthcoming visit and presentation: “I am really looking forward to coming back to Liverpool as I have such fond memories of my time at University. What I learnt in my degree has served me extremely well in my career and business life. I now run three businesses and have been fortunate to have also been involved with a number of others over the years.

“It is brilliant to have been chosen as a finalist in this national competition to find the best business export plan, and validates the approach that we have taken in the Medical Stock Images Company to be export focused from the start.”

Tim has always been interested in combining technology and business. In his degree he opted to create a business database for an accounting company in the city for his dissertation. His first foray into online business was with fellow University of Liverpool graduate, Simon Hall back in 1999. He now runs a successful digital marketing agency, Innovation Visual, advising clients as varied as Cannon Hygiene to Menzies Accountants on how to maximise the benefits of online marketing.

The International Business Festival is being held at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool in the docks area on land that was derelict at the time Tim did his degree, showing how the city continues to thrive and re-invent itself.
