Lloyds Bank Chief Economist, Adam Chester, delivered a guest lecture to Management School undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA students about his career and the opportunities that a career in banking, finance and economics presents.

Adam started his career at the Bank of England as a Financial Markets Economist and later in Monetary Policy. With further roles at the investment bank Yamaichi International, Halifax Group and HBOS, he is now Head of Research & Market Strategy at Lloyds Bank. He has written articles for various national newspapers and often appears in the financial press and on television.

Adam spoke about the skills he has developed throughout his career and how his latest role with Lloyds Bank combines economic research with client engagement. With first-hand experience he explained the effect that the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 has had on economics and what lessons have been learnt within the banking and finance sector.

He also talked about the main employers of economists, the types of roles they recruit and the key requirements students need for when they graduate. Finishing the talk with what the future may hold for economists, Adam commented on how advances in technology, increasing specialisation and welfare maximisation will all have an impact.

Following the talk students were given the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session.
