Jo Meehan, Laura Menzies and Roula Michaelides from the Operations and Marketing team have received a “Best Paper Award” at this years International Purchasing and Supply Education and Research Association (IPSERA) conference in Dortmund.

Over 120 papers were presented at the conference, hosted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics, around the theme of “from efficiency to effectiveness”. The paper entitled Aggregation versus value based procurement in public healthcare procurement” provided a critical hermeneutic analysis of recent Government healthcare policy to expose how the wider reform agenda has legitimised the dominance of narrow price-based procurement approaches in the NHS.

The research was undertaken in partnership with the NW NHS Procurement Development and was funded by a University Knowledge Exchange voucher.  The NHS has funded the second phase of the research and the work is gaining interest from the Department of Health as well as international interest from Canada and Belgium. An academic team in the Netherlands have also approached Jo, Laura and Roula to work on a cross-European healthcare procurement research project.
