University of Liverpool launches the "Year in China" Programme

To celebrate the flag-ship “Year in China” programme, the university held a launch event in the Guild of Students.

The unique programme offers undergraduate students from across the university a chance to spend a year of their studies at the University’s partner Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou, immersing themselves in Chinese language and society as well as taking modules in culture and history.

The event, which was held in conjunction with the “Study Abroad Fair”, included talks from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Janet Beer, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education, Professor Gavin Brown, and the Head of China Studies at XJTLU, Professor David Goodman.

The opportunity to study abroad allows students to develop a range of new skills and confidence, attributes which are highly valued by employers. The experience will present new challenges for students and will give them the knowledge to develop into global citizens.

Head of China Studies, Professor David Goodman said: “This is your opportunity to engage in the single most important dynamic in the world.” He highlighted the economic and cultural impact that China and Suzhou especially has on the rest of the world. China’s economic boom in recent years has allowed developments in infrastructure, industry and the introduction of the high speed rail network.

Vice Chancellor Professor Janet Beer described the opportunity to study in Suzhou as a “transformational experience for those who take part.”

The celebrations included a traditional Chinese dragon performance and a chance for guests to network over food and drink.

Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education Professor Gavin Brown said: “We hope that we have been able to pass on our excitement for this programme and that as many of you as possible grab this opportunity with both hands.”

All Management School students are eligible to take part in the “Year in China” programme. To find out more you can speak to our Study Abroad Officer Katy Kerrane.
