Business Director of Belbin UK, Jo Keeler, delivered a talk to current students as part of a unique Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) event held in the Brett Building. The CIPD is the professional body for HR and people development.

The first talk of the guest speaker series, held on the 7th October 2015, was titled “Using Belbin in employee engagement to produce a strong and productive workforce”.

Jo delivered her presentation to an audience of current MBA and MSc Human Resource Management students as well as CIPD delegates.

She explored the theory behind the “Belbin Model” which has been approved as a gold standard in management style.

Jo emphasised the importance of employee engagement, stating that better engagement makes a difference to the bottom line. Surprisingly only 17% of workers in the UK are engaged, 57% are not engaged and 26% are actively disengaged. This trend can be seen across the world.

Using the Belbin theory to identify team strengths has effectively improved engagement and teamwork. In turn, productivity increases and the organisation thrives.

Jo Keeler said: “Great managers are key. They should be able to recognise the talent around them and allocate them to the right job. The right managers can engage their key players by up to six times.”

Students were able to talk to Jo Keeler and Gary Hewins, Chartered FCIPD North West Regional Branch Co-ordinator, following the presentation at a networking event.
