MSc Programme and Project Management introduces “gamification” to its programme

Gamification

The new academic year will see the introduction of ‘Serious Games and Gamification’ to the MSc Programme and Project Management programme.

Students will undertake simulation-based and live-action activities which mimic the activities a practising project manager might face. This includes using game mechanics to improve team motivation through the development of rewards that replicate the points systems in commercial games. There will also be the use of fully integrated game-play technology to develop real-world activities. This will allow students to immerse themselves in game theory and provide them with a better understanding of topics such as risk, conflict or cost, and the implications of their decisions.

Dr Ronald Dyer is a recent addition to the Programme and Project Management team and is responsible for the introduction of these methods to the programme:  ‘It is the application of theory in real environments which best demonstrates Project Management competence. One of the challenges of most Project Management programmes is to bring some degree of realism through practical activities that allow students to gain an insight into the application of project management relevant to what they will face in the workforce. Gamification will make the learning experience both fun and relevant whilst keeping the theoretical learning outcomes central to our objectives.'

Ronald has over 20 years of experience in the field of project management, specifically focusing on capacity building and strengthening organisations. His work experience spans the United States, France and the Caribbean.

He will begin to deliver his theory of "gamification" in managing projects to the new cohort of MSc Programme and Project Management students in September.
