MBA Guest Speaker Series: Marco Del Seta

Published on

Management School students were joined by Marco Del Seta as part of the MBA guest Speaker Series.

Marco is a Software Engineering Director at Oracle, INC, managing a large organization working on Web Application technologies for Oracle's Sales and Supply chain groups, with competencies ranging from business program management to software development, testing and user interface technologies. He has held a number of different responsibilities at Sun Microsystems and has particular expertise in Software Development processes, organizational management and legal issues.

His talk, "The Right Structure: Organizational Management In Theory And Practice” touched on issues surrounding leadership approaches within business with Marco himself preferring to use a “hands off” approach, giving employees space to do what they’re good at.

He discussed topics from an academic paper, "Breaking Bad: Social Influence and the Path to Criminality in Juvenile Jails" which highlighted how groups propagate knowledge and traits and how this leads us to thinking about social structures in corporate settings. Marco underlined how this has applied to his own approaches to setting up an organization. Comparing corporations to jails brought about a provocative and interactive discussion amongst the group.

Marco has worked closely with the Management School in the past acting as a mentor to MBA students and he is taking up the role again this year.
