Two BSc Economics students recently attended the LSE SU Emerging Market forum on the 26th and 27th February.

Benjamin Rivers and Yan Zhu, both in their second year of studies, attended the prestigious event in London, with their entry funded by the Management School.

Speakers were invited from a wide range of industries and companies included Vitol and Shell Netherlands, Goldman Sachs, Vodafone, Global Environment Fund and GlaxoSmithKline. Speakers were able to advise the students on how business leaders cope with industry changes, identify opportunity for growth, as well as manage and mitigate inevitable risks within business.

Jim O’Neill, former Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, talked in ‘Beyond the BRICs: An Outlook on Future Growth Markets’, about how the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China) still account for a huge chunk of the emerging markets growth story and offer vast opportunities for companies looking to develop in this area.

Ian Taylor, CEO of Vitol, and Dick Benschop, President Director of Shell Netherlands, gave a brief introduction to the challenges and opportunities in energy industry across the upstream, midstream, downstream and oilfield services sectors.

Yan said: “The emerging market forum inspired me a lot and gave me a chance to talk to people from different industries and universities that have deepened my understanding of emerging markets and broadened my vision. Active participation in events like this is highly recommended for those ULMS students who hope to pursue a professional career in Economics and International Business. I am grateful to the strong support from the University of Liverpool Management School for giving me the valuable opportunity to attend.”
