MBA students visit Google

15 MBA students recently visited Google Dublin, Google’s largest office outside of the US.

Accompanied by our ULMS Careers Advisors Fiona McNamara and Sadie Lawty, students were given a tour of the Google offices to see first-hand the famous working environment; from the specially designed pods for collaborative working to the indoor putting green, massage facilities, pool tables, swimming pool and music room.

Students met with Experienced International Operations Executive, Derek McKellar (MBA Alumnus, 2007), who gave a talk on how Google supports and encourages innovation.

Derek delivered a presentation on career options for MBA graduates at Google. He explained about Google’s 20% time policy, whereby any Google employee can spend 20% of their time working on a project that they are passionate about. Google Chrome originated from the 20% initiative as one of their engineers was exhausted with slow web browsers, as did Google Sky when an engineer with a keen interest in astrology wanted to map the heavens similar to Google Earth.

Harjinder Singh Dusanj, current MBA student, said: "Our MBA trip to 'Google City' was exceptional. Stepping into the European HQ in Dublin was very much like my first experience to Disneyland - completely blown away by their creative approach. I thoroughly enjoyed the Irish pub theme meeting rooms!"
