Georgia Burns

Department of Psychology alumna working at R2R Global

What did you study at A-level and why did you select those subjects?
Psychology, Sociology and Criminology. I chose these subjects because I've always had a keen interest in the social sciences. I knew they would link well to my degree, equipping me with essay writing skills and the ability to analyse data at a surface level — great preparation for my undergraduate studies.

What degree did you study?
BSc Hons Psychology.

What inspired you to choose and study your degree subject?
I’ve always been fascinated by how people think and why we behave the way we do, so Psychology was a no brainer! It was also the first subject at GCSE level that I was good at. My teacher saw potential in me and helped turn my academics around — from that moment, my motivation and effort grew across all my subjects.

What key skills did you learn at university?
Academically, I developed my essay-writing skills through coursework and exams — my biggest tip is to always take note of feedback from previous assignments if you want to improve.

In terms of life skills, moving to a completely new city on my own taught me real independence. At first, it was daunting to navigate a new place and culture, but over time I discovered the city and grew to love it — I actually live here permanently now!

What jobs have you had during your career?
Whilst at university, I worked in the retail sector, which really helped me build my confidence and develop my interpersonal skills.

What is your current job and what do you enjoy about it?
After graduating, I joined R2R Global’s graduate scheme as a Recruitment Consultant — and im loving it! I particularly enjoy the research aspect of the role, I love learning about different companies across industries and mapping out their structures in detail.

Do you have an area of expertise?
I currently work across a range of markets and support multiple projects in both the London and New York markets.

What are your top tips for working in your industry?
When working in recruitment, confidence is key! Putting yourself out there and make the most of every conversation — it really increases your chances of success.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Never listen to the opinions of anyone whose shoes you wouldn't want to  walk in. Everyone's opinions matter, of course — but advice from those on a completley different isn't always relevant to your own journey.

Any advice you’d like to share?
Keep working hard! In life, you get out what you put in — it’s that simple.

Why are you passionate about your subject?
I’m passionate about Psychology because it helps us understand human behaviour on a much deeper level. It’s shown me that when people act out, it’s often a defence mechanism rather than anger or negativity. Studying Psychology has completely changed the way I see the world.
