Sumaiya Hossain

Alumna of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics and CEO and Co-Founder of Froppy

What did you study at A-level?
I studied A-Level Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

What degree did you study?
I pursued an undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

What inspired you to choose and study your degree subject?
My initial inspiration came from watching the TV show Scorpion. The show follows a group of brilliant engineers and problem-solvers working on high-stakes missions, which made engineering look incredibly exciting and impactful.

What jobs have you had during your career?
I’ve built experience across very different environments. I started as a Sales Associate at Flannels, where I learned how to communicate and connect with people. Later, I did a Software Engineering internship at J.P. Morgan, where I sharpened my technical skills, and then worked as a Technical Project Manager at Amazon, gaining insight into how large-scale tech projects are built and delivered.

What is your current job and what do you enjoy about it?
I’m currently the CEO and Co-Founder of Froppy, a fitness technology startup. What I love most is creating something from the ground up, building a product that helps people feel empowered with their fitness data, while also shaping a brand and community that people can truly connect with.

What has been your most exciting project or career role?
Without doubt, my final year project at university. I built a prototype smart mirror for fitness that integrated real-time health data. That project became the seed for Froppy, and it taught me that if you can imagine it, you can build it.

What are your top tips for working in your industry?
Be willing to take risks on yourself. Innovation often requires stepping into the unknown and trusting your ideas.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
The best advice I received was to try out everything during university—this is the best time to do anything and everything.

Any advice you’d like to share?
Believe in yourself, even when things don’t go according to plan. Also, take advice with a pinch of salt—what works for someone else may not work for you.

Why are you passionate about your career?
Growing up, I dreamed of working for MI6, which sparked my early fascination with engineering, coding, and problem-solving. What truly drives my passion now is the ability to build solutions. If you can think of something, there’s always a way to bring it to life—and that’s what excites me.
