Overview

This language module is designed for students who have completed Level 906/006 Intermediate 6, or have a B1+ standard of the language in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), for example an A level. Through a variety of methods students will develop an advanced competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking and an understanding of intermediate grammar. At the end of this 12-week module students will have reached a B2- proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to:   

  • understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar; 
  • read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints; 
  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible; 
  • present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their field of interest; 
  • write clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects related to their interests, such as an essay or report.
  • They will have a good understanding of life and culture in countries where the language is spoken and intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

This German language module is designed for students who have completed GRMN206 Intermediate German 6, or have a B1.2 standard of the language in the Common European Framework of Reference(CEFR), for example an A level. Through a variety of methods students will develop an upper intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German and an understanding of upper intermediate German grammar. At the end of this 12-week module students will have reached a B2.1 proficiency level in the CEFR and will be able to briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans as well as narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe their reactions to it. They will be able to enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events) and to understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear.

AIMS  

  • To develop an upper intermediate competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German equivalent to the B2.1 level in the CEFR; 
  • To provide students with a solid understanding of upper intermediate German grammar and to enable them to explore advanced structures independently; 
  • To explore aspects of contemporary German-speaking cultures through the medium of German; 
  • To develop students' language learning strategy use and a reflective approach towards language learning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES  

  • Apply increasingly complex reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in line with the B1+ level in  German in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 
  • Effectively communicate in  German in a variety of formal and informal situations. 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of multiple aspects of contemporary German language and German speaking cultures. 
  • Critically reflect on and effectively apply language learning strategies. 

 

Week 12: Written and speaking tests will take place this week. Completing the assessment is required for students taking the course as part of their degree.

For all other students, taking the tests is also strongly recommended, as a measure of your progress and learning.

Hueber Sicher Aktuell B2.1. Kurs- und Arbeitsbuch Lektion 1-6. Enrolled students can download the pdf versions of the Kurs- und Arbeitsbuch from Canvas. Besides, we will use current authentic material from newspapers and web pages as possible.

Study Hours

The total number of study hours for this module is 150 hours, in line with undergraduate university modules. This includes class meetings, assessment preparation and self-directed study in line with guidance from the course lecturer.

If you are studying on the extracurricular mode, we recognise that the total number of hours that you may be able to study every week may depend on your availability and previous experience studying languages, however, expected contribution to classes, homework completion, and learning outcomes will not vary.

Multilingual native speaker from Northern Germany. Master of Arts in Languages. Certificate from the Goethe Institute and Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. 20 years’ experience of teaching German as a Foreign Language in schools and at university. From beginner’s level to advanced.

Fees for language courses are £180/£90.
