GDSL members come 2nd place in IOM Hackathon!

Huge congratulations to GDSL members Ruth Neville, David Bareham, Maya Middleton-Welch and Gladys Kenyon.

On the 5th – 7th October 2023 the team took part in a two-day hackathon event, Bridging Climate Change and Human Mobility, with Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) at the IOM – UN Migration London office, collaborating with the UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR).

We are pleased to announce that the team – alongside colleagues from LSE Marion Gabriel and Ellen Gistö – were awarded second place! As a result, their work will contribute towards the IOM’s COP 28 submission and will be presented at an expert hackathon hosted in Nairobi, Kenya.

The team employed desk research, network methods, and GIS mapping techniques in order to understand mobility of internally displaced people in Ethiopia and how displacement intersects with conflict, climate, and poverty.

The judges commented that: “[they] were very impressed with your innovative network approach and extremely detailed analysis of the relevant historical, economic, and state political context.”

Keep an eye out for more information on their submission ahead of COP 28 at the end of November!
